Chevrolet started producing the Rampside version of its Corvair pickup in 1961. It had a shorter wheelbase than the cars (95 vs 108 for the cars) but still had the rear engine. This made the tailgate height quite high off the ground and the bed stepped down in front of the drive train. The Rampside got its name from the fold-down ramp on the passengers side right behind the door. This allowed you to roll or load items into the bed without having to raise them to tailgate height. Rampsides were bought by companies such as Bell Telephone as it was easy to roll the wire into the bed.
